The shoe repair shop used to be as common as the barbershop. You'd drop off a pair of worn-down dress shoes on a Tuesday and pick them up Thursday, resoled and polished, good for another few years. The cobbler knew his regulars. He'd recognize the shoes before he recognized the face.

The appliance repair technician was a household name in your neighborhood — the person your parents called when the washing machine made a sound it wasn't supposed to make. He'd arrive with a metal toolbox, open up the back of the machine with casual authority, and usually have it running again within an hour.

The watchmaker sat behind a jeweler's loupe in a small shop that smelled like machine oil, surrounded by clocks in various states of disassembly, and could diagnose a mechanical problem by sound alone.

These people existed everywhere. Now they're almost gone. And the story of how that happened is really a story about how America changed its mind about what things are worth.

The Economics of Fixing

For most of the 20th century, fixing things was simply the rational choice. Goods were expensive relative to wages. A refrigerator in 1955 cost the equivalent of several weeks' salary for an average American worker. You didn't throw that away because the compressor was acting up. You called someone who knew how to fix compressors.

The repair economy wasn't a niche — it was a fundamental part of how households managed their budgets. Shoes were resoled repeatedly before they were replaced. Suits were altered, mended, and passed down. Radios were repaired by technicians who understood vacuum tubes the way today's engineers understand circuit boards. The assumption built into everyday life was that objects had long lifespans, and that maintaining them was part of owning them.

That assumption started shifting in the postwar period, as American manufacturing scaled up and unit costs dropped. By the time the consumer electronics revolution arrived in the 1970s and 80s, the math had begun to flip. Repair costs — which are primarily labor, and labor doesn't get cheaper the way manufacturing does — started approaching or exceeding replacement costs for certain categories of goods.

The Disposability Pivot

The term that eventually entered business vocabulary was "planned obsolescence" — the practice of designing products with a limited lifespan, either through genuine engineering choices or through the cultural pressure of fashion and upgrade cycles. But even without deliberate planning, the economics pushed in the same direction.

When a new microwave costs $60 and a repair technician charges $80 an hour, the decision isn't really a decision anymore. You buy new. The old one goes to the curb.

This logic has accelerated dramatically with consumer electronics. Smartphones are engineered in ways that make self-repair difficult or impossible — batteries glued in, components soldered together, software locked to prevent third-party servicing. The industry frames this as a feature (sleeker design, better waterproofing) while conveniently ensuring that the repair economy around their products stays thin.

Right-to-repair legislation has been pushing back on this in recent years, with several states passing laws requiring manufacturers to make parts and diagnostic tools available. It's a genuine policy fight, and it reflects how seriously the repair question has become — not just for consumers, but for the environment.

What the Repairman Knew

There's something worth dwelling on beyond the economics: what was lost when repair culture declined wasn't just convenience or cost savings. It was a particular kind of knowledge.

The appliance repair technician understood how things worked at a mechanical level. He could look at a motor and tell you why it was failing. The cobbler understood leather, construction, and wear patterns. The watchmaker understood mechanical systems of extraordinary precision — springs and gears calibrated to tolerances measured in fractions of a millimeter.

This was skilled, embodied knowledge built over years of practice. It lived in the hands as much as the mind. And because it was local — your neighborhood's repairman, not a call center — it was also relational. These were people who knew the community's objects the way a doctor knows a patient's history.

Vocational training programs that once fed these trades have largely been defunded or deprioritized in American education. The cultural prestige of "making" and "fixing" dropped as the economy shifted toward services and knowledge work. The result is a generation that is, on average, less capable of maintaining the physical objects in their lives than their grandparents were — and less likely to think of that as a problem.

The Revival That's Quietly Happening

It would be wrong to say repair culture is entirely dead. There's a genuine countermovement.

Repair cafés — community spaces where volunteers help people fix broken items — have spread across the country. YouTube has created a self-repair ecosystem of remarkable depth; there are channels dedicated entirely to restoring vintage electronics, and they have millions of subscribers. The vintage clothing market has driven renewed interest in tailoring and textile repair. Farmers have been fighting — and sometimes winning — battles against manufacturers who lock their equipment against independent repair.

These aren't fringe movements. They reflect a real appetite for the idea that things should last, that fixing is worth doing, and that the knowledge required to do it is worth preserving.

The Longer View

The disposability era is, historically speaking, quite short. For most of human history, objects were made to last and repaired when they failed. The throwaway culture of the late 20th century is the anomaly, not the norm.

Whether economics, environmental pressure, or cultural shift drives the pendulum back remains to be seen. But the fact that the question is being asked at all — that right-to-repair is a political issue, that repair cafés fill up on weekends, that people are paying premium prices for goods made to last — suggests that something is changing.

Somewhere, a cobbler is resoling a pair of boots that have another decade in them. The clock on his wall was fixed by a watchmaker thirty years ago and keeps perfect time.

Some things were built to last. We're starting to remember why that mattered.
